Day 10!

Distance: 2.17 mi
Time: 32 mins (8 mins running)
Location: Gym

Went to the gym with my housemates, it was a lot of fun. I felt the strongest I'd ever felt on this run, which was nice. I think it had a lot to do with the music I played - I had my iPhone on shuffle and just skipped whenever it wasn't a pumped up song, and I got a bunch of good ones. I upped my speed, so I spent probably 7 mins at over 5.5, and at least 2 of them at 6.0, which I had never gotten up to before.

Feeling good!

Day 9!

Distance: 2.0 mi
Time: 32 mins (5 minutes running)
Location: gym

Did ok, got pretty tired about midway through my running sections, but rallied by the end and was really energized, and tried out some other cardio machine because of it. Which made the walk home exhausting, but oh well. Excited to get to 2 miles in the set time, instead of going over a lot to get to it.
Now that I'm at 30 minutes total time, up from the 20 I started at, the serious work starts. It's not coming at the greatest time, since these next 2 weeks are going to be insanely busy, with 2 shows to rehearse/organize, auditions next week, classes starting, working all the time. But now that I'm more comfortable running around campus, I'll only need to find a half hour between classes every other day, which will make it easier from the past times I've done it where I've only worked out in the gym.

Day 8 Try Two!

Distance: 1.85 mi
Time: 27 minutes (10 mins running)
Location: Gym

This was hard - I decided to redo day 8, because I didn't get through it all last time. The day didn't start off well, I had a pain in my side so bad I had to stop after the first 2 minute section. I stretched and breathed and restarted though, and I made it through the whole thing - barely. The last two sections I had to decrease my speed from 5.5 mph to 5.3. That made it a lot easier. I think it was the 2 minute sections that got to me - when I run tomorrow it's back to one minute/one minute so it should be better.
Week 2 done!

Day 8!

Time: 32 mins
Running time: ~5 minutes
Distance: 2.13 mi
Location: Around campus

I am sweaty and tired. The sun was pounding down on me today, and I skipped the last 2 minute section of running, because I just couldn't make my legs go any faster. But it isn't my legs that are hurting, it's my breathing method or motivation or something. I'm going to go to the gym next time to do the next session, I'm hoping the presence of air conditioning and lack of cars next to me will help.
I've also started using audiobooks to run to now - I've started off with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. It's going well so far.

Day 7

Total time: 30 minutes
Total Running time: 8 minutes
Distance: ~1.5 mi
Location: hiking trail

Today was definitely the most difficult day so far. I was supposed to spend 12 minutes on a run 2/walk 1 minutes routine, and by the last minute of the last running section I just couldn't go any more - I stopped going around the trail Dylan and I were on and started running in circles to trick myself into thinking it wasn't so bad. I made it through the last ~45 seconds like that, and stopped with about 5 seconds left, so not too bad. I felt like throwing up after that though - I think I was overly dehydrated, and it was very hot and exposed to the sun on the trail that afternoon. I think I'll probably do the next day in the gym to recover from how hard day 7 was.

Day 5!

I'm starting this blog a bit late - I'm already into week 2 of my running program. This is the third time I've tried it - the first time I got through to about week 4 before life got too crazy. The most recent time I only got to day 5 (which I just finished!) before I got lazy and sad. But! This time I am making every effort to finish this program. Including starting this blog!

So, to explain the program I'm doing, the first set is a 6 week "Couch to 5k" program, where you start off not being able to run at all (me!) and end running for 30 minutes unbroken. I run/walk every other day, escalating overall time and time running. The second builds on the first section for another 6 weeks to double overall running time to 60 minutes.

Thus I begin tracking:

Day 5: Sept 1st
Overall time: 32 minutes
Running time: 5 minutes
Distance: 2.13 mi
Location: Around campus

So technically I was only supposed to spend 25 minutes overall running, but the problem I am finding with running outside is that whenever the day is over, I tend to not end right where I should. Today, when I ran around campus, I ended near starbucks, and then had to walk the next 7 minutes to get home. Alternating between outside running (trails or on campus) and the gym has been helpful, and it will prepare me for when I want to eventually do 5ks and such outside.
